IFM recently had the chance to participate in the Benedict College Homecoming and International Festival. The day started as 19 students represented their countries in a parade of nations (including some flags borrowed from the Columbia International Festival). Benedict currently has nearly 200 international students. Other events included a performance by the college percussion team, lunch at various ethnic food trucks, a fencing exhibition, and a chance to learn Caribbean dance steps. IFM had one of a dozen booths, where our staff and volunteers got to interact with passing students and faculty. Several recognized photos in our display of previous Benedict students, and administrators expressed thanks for including Benedict students in IFM activities.
One big need is for volunteers to help us drive our vans to places like Benedict, to pick up students on Friday nights! If you have a good driving record, are over 25, and can help at least once a month, please contact us ASAP! And please make this need known at your church. Sadly, some people who share our love for the international community don’t think they can volunteer because they are not great conversationalists, teachers, cooks, etc. But IFM needs volunteers with a variety of skills, including drivers, child-care providers, people who can present a practical talk, handymen, gardeners, and people willing to help clean up after the program. So, even if you don’t think you are “good at talking to people,” you might have a skill we really need! Contact us for more information.
