Friday, April 4, 2008 - Global Education Day (GED) is one day that is set aside especially for school children during the Columbia International Festival to educate them about the variety of cultures that are represented in South Carolina. Students of all levels are invited to attend GED but it is expected those students in grades 3-10 will benefit the most from the experience.

Incorporating both fun and learning, GED gives educators and parents an opportunity to open the eyes of their students, not only to the richness of our world but also to the ethnic diversity of South Carolina and to the positive contributions being made by foreign-born citizens. The day’s events will focus on meeting the South Carolina Social Studies & Foreign Language Standards:

The deadline for registration is March 26, 2008.

Social Studies Standards:
3rd Grade
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of places and regions.
4th Grade
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the world in spatial terms.
5th Grade
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of places and regions.
6th Grade
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of cultural regions in spatial terms.
7th Grade
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of world culture regions.
8-10th Grade
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of places and regions.

Foreign Language Standards:
•Participate in multilingual communities at home & around the World.
•Develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
•Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

 Tour I  9:00 am - 11:00 am
 Tour II  10:00 am - 12:00 pm
 Tour III  11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Students can "travel the world"
in one day


Without leaving the comfort of their state, students can now "travel the world" in one day, "visiting" more than 60 countries.

Students can view about sixty national exhibits

Students will have opportunity to view handicrafts, artifacts, clothing, musical instruments, videos, and pictures at the 60 national exhibits.

Students can enjoy
    the
International Showcase
Students will see cultural dancing and singing and stories at the International Showcase
stage. Schools are invited to participate in these performances. Also, they will be able to read stories, histories, and other literature from different cultures at a special book exhibit.  Information and an application to participate in the International Showcase is available at www.cifonline.org/showcase.htm

All students will receive Passports
Passports are booklets that look like a normal passport and contains interesting information about all participating countries.

Art & Essay Contests

The Art & Essay contests conducted by Global Education Day is open to students from Grades 3 through 8. Contest rules, deadlines, and

Student Admission $5.00
Free admission for teachers & chaperones  

** Schools should plan to eat lunch before arriving or after departing.
     Souvenirs are available for purchase.
